Giant Platters!

Here are some very large stoneware platters that I have thrown recently.  I am using some recycled stoneware (there is a picture here on the blog) and a hairdryer to stiffen the clay as I pull out the large form.  Large flat forms like these are thrown on bats, so that they can be removed from the wheelhead after they are complete, to start the drying process.  A first cut is made by placing the wire into a groove at the base of the pot where it joins the bat, and cutting all the way through, being careful to keep the wire flush with the bat.  Now the form is ready to be placed on a shelf or table and covered loosely with plastic to begin drying.
